How I got here

I started out working with foster children about 30 years ago. That’s where I learned two things about myself: I’m a good listener, and I have a calming voice. I went back to school for an associate’s in human services, then a bachelor’s in sociology with a minor in psychology, then my master’s in mental health counseling.

After that I worked in community mental health and, eventually, in substance-abuse treatment centers. That work taught me both empathy and healthy confrontation, and I still use both every day.

How I work

I’m calm and compassionate, and I’m also willing to challenge you. I balance that by giving you room to vent without judgment. I use CBT, DBT and mindfulness, and I focus on healthy coping skills you can use between sessions.

With couples, the work is on communication that gets you through conflict and on letting go of the past. With substance use, it centers on relapse prevention. With grief, we use the stages of grief as a map, alongside healthy ways to cope.

Who I work with

I work with adults 18 and up, couples and families. Most people come to me because life has become unmanageable and they need some guidance and healthier ways to cope. Couples usually come because communication has broken down and resentment has built up.
