Families

Counseling for families in Ormond Beach

For families who love each other and can’t seem to talk. Everyone in the same room, someone in the chair who isn’t on a side, and one change at a time.

Why families come in

Usually because something shifted and nobody can name it. The group text goes unanswered. A holiday everyone used to look forward to is now something to get through. A parent and a grown child talk past each other, or don’t talk. Someone is drinking, or grieving, or ill, and the whole house has quietly reorganized itself around it. Everyone is tired, everyone feels unheard, and the same argument keeps coming back in a different outfit.

How we work

Family sessions put everyone in the same room with someone who isn’t on a side. The first job is making sure each person gets heard all the way through, which for most families is the first time in a while. Then we go after the argument underneath the argument: what the fight about the dishes, or the money, or the visit that got cancelled is actually about. We work on how you talk to each other, on the resentments that have built up, and we pick one concrete change that would make home easier to live in. We start there, not everywhere.

I started this work in foster care nearly 30 years ago. That’s where I learned that the family, not just the person in the chair, is often the client, and that families change when the pattern changes, not when one person gets fixed.

Who this is for

Adult families in every shape: parents and grown children, siblings, couples with in-laws in the picture, blended families, and families carrying a member’s recovery or a loss together. I work with adults 18 and up. If your family includes a teenager, call me first and we’ll talk about the right fit.

Sessions and fees

Family sessions are 50 minutes and $175, in person in Ormond Beach or by secure video anywhere in Florida. Family work is often a shorter run than individual counseling: a handful of sessions to change a pattern, then a check-in when you need it. Many families pair it with couples sessions or individual work for one member, and we can plan that together.

  • Every dinner goes quiet, or goes wrong
  • A parent and an adult child only talk when something’s broken

FAQ

Common questions

Does everyone have to come?

No. Start with whoever is willing. Families often begin with two people, and the others join once they see it isn’t a trial. Sometimes the most useful work happens with the one person who wants things to change.

Do you take sides?

No. My job is the family, not a verdict on who’s right. Everyone gets heard, and I’ll be honest with all of you, including about the parts that are hard to hear.

Do you work with teenagers?

I work with adults 18 and up. If your family includes a teenager, call me first: we’ll talk about whether family sessions here are the right fit, or whether I should point you to someone who works with adolescents.

Are you a marriage and family therapist?

No. I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (Florida license MH11597). In Florida, mental health counseling includes work on relationships and family dynamics, and that is what these sessions are. If you specifically want a licensed marriage and family therapist, say so and I’ll point you to one.

Can we do this online?

Yes. Family sessions work by secure video anywhere in Florida, with everyone on one screen or each person on their own, or in person at the office at 785 W Granada Blvd in Ormond Beach.

Ready when you are.
